NYALAWE TRADITION
A coastal cultural tradition that symbolizes gratitude and remains an important part of the fishing community’s way of life in the Santolo area.
Nyalawé is one of the traditional cultural practices of the Santolo Beach coastal community that has been passed down from generation to generation. It has become an integral part of local life and reflects the close relationship between coastal residents and the natural resources that sustain them.

The tradition involves catching seasonal fish that appear in large numbers along the shoreline and estuary areas. One of the most commonly targeted species is hejo tonggong fish, along with juvenile fish or fish fry that typically emerge during specific periods of the year. This activity is not only carried out by fishermen but also involves local residents of various ages and backgrounds.
For the hejo tonggong fishing season, activities usually take place at night during the dry season, especially around the full moon period. Community members gather along the beach after the evening prayer until dawn to catch fish arriving in large numbers. The coastline comes alive with moonlight, lanterns, and bonfires, creating a unique atmosphere for gathering and processing the catch.
Another part of the tradition, known as Nyalawéan, is held annually on the 25th of Rajab according to the Islamic Hijri calendar. This activity takes place along rivers and estuaries using simple tools such as sieves or nets. Since juvenile fish move against the current, participants position their equipment along the water flow to collect the fish.
In addition to its economic value, the Nyalawé Tradition strengthens community bonds. It fosters cooperation, togetherness, and social interaction among coastal residents. The tradition often attracts visitors interested in experiencing the unique cultural heritage of Santolo Beach firsthand. As a treasured local cultural legacy, the Nyalawé Tradition remains an important part of the identity of South Garut’s coastal communities. It not only enhances the cultural tourism appeal of Santolo Beach but also helps preserve local wisdom and traditional practices that continue to thrive today.
